Seller Profit Doctor

For Etsy sellers

Where an Etsy shop’s money goes, and how to keep more of it.

Etsy charges a listing fee, a transaction fee, payment processing and, on some orders, an Offsite Ads fee. The free check-up adds those to your materials, shipping and ads, shows what each order keeps, and gives each loss a fix with what it’s worth at your numbers, if orders hold.

What the check-up asks

Seven short screens, in the words Shop Manager uses, and an eighth if you run Etsy Ads. Your best guess is fine.

  1. About how many orders do you get in a typical month?

Shop Manager > Stats > Orders. Your best guess is fine.

  2. What does a typical item sell for?

Item price, before shipping. If you sell many things, use the one you sell most.

  3. What do materials and supplies cost for one item?

Print on demand? Use what your print partner charges you.

  4. Shipping on a typical order.

Label costs: Shop Manager > Finances > Payment account > Shipping, or your last label.

  5. Has your shop ever sold $10,000 or more in any 12 months?

Etsy counts item sales only, after discounts and cancellations, without shipping and tax.

  6. Do you run Etsy Ads? About how much a day?

Your daily budget is fine. The Etsy Ads page shows Budget Spent for the last 30 days.

  7. What is your Etsy Ads ROAS, the sales you get for each $1 of ads?

Only if you run Etsy Ads. Etsy Ads page > ROAS, last 30 days. It is Revenue from ads divided by Budget Spent.

The losses it looks for

Each check runs on your answers. Where it finds a loss, the result gives its dollars a month and the fix.

  • Shipping gap

The fix: Put the gap into the item price, or switch to calculated shipping, so what the buyer pays for shipping covers the label and the packaging.

  • Ads on Etsy that don't pay back

    If you run Etsy Ads

The fix: Turn off ads on listings that earn less than your break-even ROAS, which the check-up works out from your own margin.

  • Offsite Ads fees not priced in

The fix: Build the average Offsite Ads fee into your prices. A shop still allowed to opt out can also test turning Offsite Ads off.

  • Price below true cost

The fix: Raise the price until it covers every cost: materials, packaging, the label, ads and Etsy's fees.

The paid reports ask a few more questions and check the smaller losses too. Every fix’s value assumes your orders hold, and a risk line says how far they could fall before the fix leaves you worse off.
