Seller Profit Doctor

For Amazon sellers

Where an Amazon seller’s money goes, and how to keep more of it.

On Amazon each unit pays a referral fee, often an FBA fee, and its share of Sponsored Products. The free check-up works out what each unit keeps from your price, landed cost, category and how your orders ship, and gives each loss a fix with what it’s worth at your numbers, if orders hold.

What the check-up asks

Eight short screens for most sellers, in Seller Central’s words: the FBA fee screen shows only if Amazon ships your orders, the shipping screen only if you do, and one more if you run Sponsored Products. Your best guess is fine.

  1. About how many units do you sell in a typical month?

Business Reports > Sales Dashboard > Units Ordered.

  2. What is your selling price on Amazon?

If you sell many things, use the one you sell most.

  3. What is your landed cost per unit?

Product + freight + duties + prep, to Amazon's door.

  4. Which category is it in on Amazon?

It sets your referral fee and the return rate Amazon allows.

  5. How do your orders ship?

Two taps: who ships your orders, and your selling plan.

  6. What does Amazon charge per unit to ship it (FBA fee)?

Only if Amazon ships your orders. Fee Preview or the Revenue Calculator shows it.

  7. Shipping on a typical order.

Only for orders you ship. For the orders you ship. Label costs: your last label, or Orders > Manage Orders.

  8. Sponsored Products (PPC): about how much a month?

    Your best guess is fine.

  9. What is your ACoS?

Only if you run Sponsored Products. Your Sponsored Products reports show it. It is ad spend divided by ad sales.

The losses it looks for

Each check runs on your answers. Where it finds a loss, the result gives its dollars a month and the fix.

  • Price just over a fee line

The fix: Price at the line, or at the lowest price above today's that keeps as much per unit.

  • Media closing fee eats cheap items

    Books, music and video

The fix: Set a floor price that covers the closing fee, or sell low-price items in lots.

  • Shipping gap on orders you ship

    Orders you ship yourself

The fix: Put the gap into the price or the shipping charge.

  • Sponsored Products above break-even ACoS

    If you run Sponsored Products

The fix: Bring campaigns down to your break-even ACoS, worked out from what each unit keeps. Cutting ads can cut organic rank too, so the value is shown as “up to”.

  • Selling plan

The fix: Switch to the plan that costs less at your units: Individual charges for each item sold, Professional a monthly fee.

  • Price below landed cost

The fix: Reprice to break even or reach your target margin, with every fee worked out again at the new price, or cut your landed cost.

EstimateAmazon keeps its fulfillment, storage and returns fee tables behind the Seller Central login, so FBA figures come from third-party rate cards. Every dollar that rests on one is marked an estimate and shown apart from the total of sure losses.

The paid reports ask a few more questions and check the smaller losses too. Every fix’s value assumes your orders hold, and a risk line says how far they could fall before the fix leaves you worse off.
